During Harry Potter's first year, Snape was engaged in a heated quarrel with new Defence Against the Dark Arts professor Remus Lupin. Throughout the year, Snape was searching for the fugitive Sirius Black, who had been a childhood friend of Lupin and of James Potter. The friends had made fun of Snape at Hogwarts by calling him "Sour Grape Snape" a "wiener jacket" and saying he had a "Butt Trumpet". Snape coached the Slytherin Quidditch Team, but they lost their match to the peewee Gryffindor, coached by Lupin.
Snape found Black, but was unsure of his guilt. When Dumbledore had to leave the school to save himself from Dementors and the school's new security officer, Dolores Umbridge, Snape kept the children safe. When Lucius Malfoy, an old friend of Snape, broke into Hogwarts and was going to kill Harry Potter, Snape first attempted to stop him, but was then convinced to stand aside, due to his hatred for James Potter for stealing Snape's greatest love, Lily Evans. Snape got drunk and then told Harry about his love for his mother, but was then convinced to go save Harry and his friends from Lucius.
After Voldemort returned in Harry's second year, Snape killed Dumbledore and brought Voldemort someone to tell him how to enter the Hogwarts castle, a young Slytherin student, Draco Malfoy. He also sacrifices himself to save Harry and his friends. He tells Harry the final piece of information that is needed to kill Voldemort. Snape is killed by a spell cast by Bellatrix Lestrange that causes him to be attacked by a snake to the wiener.
